Another day, another award

Tuesday, June 3, 2014

Junior righthander Dan Altavilla of the Mercyhurst University baseball team claimed yet another major postseason award late Monday night when he captured the inaugural Brett Tomko Award as Division II's most outstanding pitcher. Altavilla won an extremely close vote to win the award, just barely besting West Florida's Jordan DeLorenzo and St. Edward's Brannon Easterling who finished second and third respectively.

On Monday, Altavilla was named the 2014 ABCA/Rawlings Division II National Pitcher of the Year, becoming the first Mercyhurst pitcher to garner the award since the program's inception in 1971. In addition to his National Pitcher of the Year Award, Altavilla was also named to the ABCA/Rawlings First Team All-American Team - the first Mercyhurst player to earn the distinction of First Team All-American from any organization since Justin Santonocito earned the honor in 1998.

The list of postseason honors for Altavilla has been extensive and should culminate this weekend during the 2014 Major League Baseball first year player's draft. The Laker fireballer certainly appears to be heading to professional baseball after this weekend's draft and could potentially become the highest draft pick that Mercyhurst has ever had. Read more at
