Mercyhurst's sustainability studies program reflects the growing interest among our students — and students across the nation — in issues and careers pertaining to environmental sustainability. Grounded in the liberal arts, sustainability studies is a rich multidisciplinary field of study. The curriculum offers students the opportunity to engage in critical thinking and problem solving in a wide range of subject areas and features experiential learning in a focused area of study. In addition, it is designed to give students in a wide-range of majors the tools to effectively contend with pressing global issues of resource depletion, environmental degradation and environmental injustice. 

Facilities:

  • The university has two (2) geothermal heat and cooled buildings on the Erie campus and a third on the North East campus.
  • Mercyhurst installed two compost tubs on the Erie Camus during Fall 2012.
  • Mercyhurst purchases wind power as an offset for all emissions caused by electricity consumption on the Erie campus.

Career options for Sustainability majors/minors

1. Education

Tasks:
  • Working for school boards, assisting with sustainability strategic planning in order to reduction energy consumption and primarily cut cost
  • As a elementary or high school educator, incorporating sustainability into the classroom
  • Assisting to create education programs incorporating sustainability for after school or summer programs for K-12
Applicable Academic Programs:
  • Sustainability Studies Major
  • Education Major w/ Sustainability Studies Minor
  • Post Baccalaureate Certificate in Sustainability Studies

2. Sustainability Consultant or Coordinator

Tasks:
  • Planning and Coordinating events and educational programs teaching environmental, social, and economic responsibility. This could be for businesses and corporations, higher education facilities, or even primary schools.
  • Tracking of energy usage or Greenhouse Gas(GHG) Emissions.
  • Creating strategic plans for energy reduction and GHG emissions mitigation.
Applicable Academic Programs:
  • Sustainability Studies Major
  • Almost any major w/ Sustainability Studies Minor
  • Biology or Chemistry Major w/ Sustainability Studies Concentration
  • Post Baccalaureate Certificate in Sustainability Studies

3. Event Coordinator

Tasks:
  • Planning and organizing events for businesses, political campaigns, conferences, etc. that are socially, economically, and environmentally responsible.
Applicable Academic Programs:
  • Sustainability Studies Major
  • Marketing or Business Management Major w/ Sustainability Studies Minor
  • Post Baccalaureate Certificate in Sustainability Studies

4. Sales and Business Assistant

Tasks:
  • Assisting with the triple bottom line in terms of sales, accounting, marketing, etc.
  • Developing sales and marketing plans geared toward sustainability
  • Analyzing environmental impacts from a company’s business practices.
  • Financial audits for business plans evaluating environmental risks or impacts.
Applicable Academic Programs:
  • Sustainability Studies Major
  • Accounting, Business, Business Management, Communications or Marketing Major w/ Sustainability Studies Minor
  • Post Baccalaureate Certificate in Sustainability Studies

5. Sustainable Building Design (including LEED design)

Tasks:
  • Working with LEED certification for new or existing buildings
  • Consulting on sustainable features for new building or retrofits for existing buildings.

  • Interior Design Major w/ Sustainability Studies Minor
  • Post Baccalaureate Certificate in Sustainability Studies

6. Sustainability Consultant for Exterior or Interior Design

Tasks:
  • Assisting customers with environmental and economically responsible choices for their interior or exterior design
Applicable Academic Programs:
  • Interior Design Major w/ Sustainability Studies Minor
  • Post Baccalaureate Certificate in Sustainability Studies

7. Sustainable Agriculture or Horticulture

Tasks:
  • Creating strategic business plans for local agriculture businesses including grapes, vegetables, orchards, nurseries, etc
  • Assisting with Organic certification or movement from traditional farming to organic.
  • Sustainable Landscape Design for commercial or residential use

  • Business Major w/ Sustainability Studies Minor

8. Government or Campaign Work

Tasks:
  • Assessing and research sustainability topics
  • Planning and organizing events for businesses, political campaigns, conferences, etc. that are socially, economically, and environmentally responsible.
  • Creating strategic plans for local governments, incorporating sustainability through environmental, social, and economic responsibility.
