English Major

Mercyhurst’s Bachelor of Arts degree in English provides a foundation in writing, literature, language, and communication to prepare students for careers or advanced degrees. The curriculum focuses on composition that encourages effective use of language for good communication, as well as study of early and modern literature, which promotes a deeper understanding of the human experience.

The program consists of 45 credits of study, and our students begin with a class designed to introduce them to the English major. In this class, students learn about conventions of the genres of literature, the language of the discipline, literary critical theory, and practical information about internships and study abroad programs to help students prepare for their future careers.

As student progress through the major, they take small seminar courses, a class in Shakespeare, Literary Theory and Criticism, and the capstone class, the Senior English Project.

Faculty in the department are always happy to have students interested in English at Mercyhurst visit our classes. Please feel free to join us!
