New Media Concentration
The days of television, radio, and newspapers being the only forms of media are over. With the convergence of print and electronic media and the development of newer technologies like podcasts, blogs, and streaming video, students must learn the creative and technical skills necessary to work in new media outlets.
Whether a student is interested in production, broadcasting, or journalism, this program covers it all and provides the training and skills to keep up with this ever-changing industry.
New media students learn to select, edit, write, and format content for web-based and traditional media.
Students learn the theory and practice in reporting, writing and editing in-depth news stories, including the use of computer-assisted reporting techniques.
Campus media outlets
, such as the student newspaper, Hurst TV, and WMCE AM/FM, allow our students to learn 'hands-on' reporting, analysis and interpretation, production, design, and techniques of new media
. And students will have the opportunity to work with AVID editing systems, which offers tools for film, video, audio, 3D animation, gaming and broadcast editing.
In addition to the common core requirements, new media students must take the following courses:

- Comm 350 Visual Editing or approved elective
- Comm 445 Multimedia Storytelling
- Comm 450 Convergence Management
- Comm 392 Communication Campaigns or approved elective
