For detailed information about the Computer Systems or Mathematics program, visit the department website.
The department offers degrees in both mathematics and computer systems. The goal of the mathematics/computer systems department at Mercyhurst is to provide students with the knowledge essential to the pursuit of a career in government, industry, commerce or education, or for entrance into graduate school for further study.
This course will be offered for the first time in fall 2008, and is one of several new courses being planned by the Math and Computer Information Systems Department.
It will enable students to learn basic programming skills by developing animations and simple interactive games. The course will provide an engaging computer/quantitative option to students who would like to express their creativity in this medium. It will be especially relevant to students majoring in such programs as Computer Information Systems (Web Development), Communication (Visual Communication and New Media), and Art (Graphic Design).
3D Programming and Animation will use the Alice programming language and environment, a 3D computing environment developed by Randy Pausch and Carnegie Mellon University. Alice introduces students to programming in an environment that is very visual and engaging and allows students to focus on creative ideas without becoming bogged down with heavy and tedious syntax, present in such languages as C++ and Java.
