Education

The education department at Mercyhurst College, part of the Hafenmaier School of Education and Behavioral Sciences, has as its mission developing teachers who are intellectually and spiritually sensitive, and professionally and socially responsible; and who work to bring out those qualities in others. To accomplish this mission, the teacher education program must enable prospective teachers to help their students to grow in intellectual curiosity, self-confidence, knowledge, responsibility, and interpersonal relationships.

The education department is dedicated to preparing prospective teachers not only to carry on the educational program of today, but also to build the diversity of programs needed for tomorrow in a global community. To achieve this objective demands, students are instilled with a professional consciousness arising from an awareness of professional status, appreciation of professional goals, and acceptance of professional obligations.

Each prospective teacher must accept the responsibility for being prepared in a unique way to meet the needs of all children in the learning environment. Prospective teachers must have knowledge of curriculum subject matter, skills of assessment and planning for student learning outcomes, familiarity with a variety of teaching materials, wide and varied experience in working with children, commitment to continued personal and professional growth, and a deep love of human beings. Above all, the Mercyhurst College education graduate will be a multifaceted individual - warm, empathetic and competent.
