Physician Assistant Studies faculty member Robin Duke, the advisor of the Mercyhurst Physician Assistant Student Society (MPASS) and the members of MPASS started fundraising efforts in September 2015 to raise money and collect goods for the Community Shelter Services in Erie, PA. The fundraising was in part a challenge set out by the Pennsylvania Society of Physician Assistants (PSPA) in association with their annual conference held in Erie, October 21st through the 24th.
The MPASS students wrapped up fundraising efforts the week of October 6th, which is also National Physician Assistant Week. After only two short months, the PA students raised $1,300 and collected a pick-up truck full of bedding, clothing and household supplies for use at the shelter. The Mercyhurst Physician Assistant students and faculty proudly represented the University at the PSPA conference and presented the monetary donation and the donated goods to the Community Shelter Service.
In 2015, Six Mercyhurst Physician Assistant students from the Class of 2017 went on a medical mission trip to Honduras. The mission trip was hosted by International IMPACT through Medicine in Zambrano, Honduras with the Amor Sin Fronteras (Love without Borders) Ministry. While in this country, medical services were provided to over 500 Honduran patients who have limited access to medicine as most IMPACT clinics are in July and January, and are their only source of medical care. The care provided in Zambrano and the remote community of El Espino included preventative, acute and chronic care to patients of all ages. This experience in humanitarianism was invaluable and life changing!
