The Master of Science in Secondary Education: Pedagogy and Practice program offers graduate-level coursework for both individuals already certified as secondary education teachers, as well as those with a bachelor degree in fields other than secondary education who wish to pursue secondary certification in English, math, science or social studies.
This urban-based program focuses on the pedagogical links of teaching as art, science and social justice, as well as teaching as theory, research and practice. Coursework will be offered in educational research, foundations, learner diversity, cross-curricular best assessment and teaching practices, as well as content-specific teaching methodologies in math, science, social studies, and English.
In Pennsylvania all teachers, from novice to expert, are required to continue their education beyond a bachelor’s degree, and to attain 24 graduate credits within the first five years of teaching. Mercyhurst continues to be at the cutting edge in developing teacher-leaders who have a rich background in action research. This program satisfies the Pennsylvania certification requirements and continuing teacher professional development. Individuals completing this program will be qualified to pursue doctoral programs in educational leadership.
At Mercyhurst, the quality of the graduate education is high, but the tuition remains one of the lowest among colleges and universities in the Erie and northwest Pennsylvania areas. In addition, a limited number of graduate assistantships are available to eligible students, and many schools and employers offer tuition reimbursement.
Classes are conveniently held in the evenings, allowing participants to continue working while enrolled in the program. Courses are offered year round, allowing customization for individual students upon consultation with the program director.
