B.S. in Industrial Engineering and Management; Earned in 2012
University of Oulu
"I thought that by combining my undergraduate engineering degree and the organizational leadership master's degree that I would have a practical and unique skill set, including a strong academic base before jumping into a full-time business position.
"I chose Mercyhurst by coincidence, and it is my fortune that Mercyhurst provided a leadership master's program. Before applying to Mercyhurst, my goal was earning a MBA. Now, I believe that the leadership degree can be placed on the same level as a MBA.
"The OL program gives you a strong educational base and a good opportunity to become an influential and high-performing leader. It teaches you that a good leader is a good listener and is also able to think through issues from multiple perspectives, allowing you to choose the best possible solutions to a conflict."
— Mikko Sarkkinen
Mikko Sarkkinen, a native of Oulu, Finland, is pursuing a Master of Science in Organizational Leadership at Mercyhurst University, with a concentration in global entrepreneurship. Before commencing his studies in the United States, he studied Industrial Engineering and Management at the University of Oulu, where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in 2012.
As a student, Mikko worked during summers, as well as part-time to gain experience and to cultivate his interests in the areas of technology and economics. After earning his bachelor's degree, he worked for Nokia Siemens Networks as a quality team leader, where his duties included people management and activities in production. This instructive experience taught him to cooperate with subordinates, and it required him to make decisions under pressure, which he found to be one of his strengths.
In addition, Mikko previously worked as a junior consultant for Fortuna Partners, where he performed market analysis for start-up projects. He worked here while enrolled in the University of Oulu; prior to that, he worked on several construction sites.
Mikko was drawn to Mercyhurst through his passion (and hobby) for soccer. Mikko has played soccer for 18 years and was pleased that he was able to combine both his academics and the sport at the 'Husrt. After graduation, Mikko plans to return to Finland to pursue his Master of Science in Industrial Engineering and Management, followed by an international career in the areas of technology and economics.
