Higher Education Administration
“I have truly learned to ‘Carpe Diem’ while at Mercyhurst. I have had so many awesome opportunities presented to me over the five years that I've been at Mercyhurst. Had I not learned very early on to just JUMP and ‘go for it,’ then I would have missed out on educational opportunities, chances to learn, leadership roles and experiences, and I never would have encountered, come to know, and become great friends with the caring and hospitable community of Mercyhurst. The sisters of Mercy truly gave the Mercyhurst community a road map when they chose Carpe Diem as the motto. I have learned to never pass up an opportunity because the results and possibilities are endless!”
— Lindsay Cox ’12
As a native of Erie, Pa., Lindsay Cox is a first-year student in the organizational leadership program. After graduating from Mercyhurst Preparatory School in 2008, she followed the Mercy tradition and enrolled at Mercyhurst University. As an undergraduate student at Mercyhurst, she became involved in several campus clubs and organizations, holding leadership positions such as president of the elite Ambassador Club, student chair of Summer Orientation and Welcome Week, and chair of the Senior Class Gift Committee. In recognition of those roles, she was chosen as the recipient of the Frank Barry Leadership Award, one of Mercyhurst’s top graduation awards. It is given annually to a graduating senior who exemplifies superior student leadership and campus involvement.
Lindsay values her undergraduate leadership experiences as she gained knowledge and familiarity with several different departments, including the Office of Undergraduate Admissions, the Campus Involvement Center, and the Office of Alumni Relations and Annual Giving. It was through her leadership roles that she became interested in pursuing a career in higher education. She earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in business from Mercyhurst (magna cum laude) and a minor in strategic communication. She then decided staying at Mercyhurst was the perfect opportunity to continue her academic and professional endeavors through graduate studies
Lindsay began pursuing her Master of Science degree in Organizational Leadership at Mercyhurst in 2012. She was specifically attracted to this program because it offered the concentration in higher education administration. While completing her graduate studies, she works as a Graduate Assistant for the Office Alumni Relations and Annual Giving, working closely with the Office of Institutional Advancement.
Lindsay says she is gaining valuable experience in higher education as she interacts with professionals in the department, performs marketing and public relations actions through social media outlets, and oversees student callers of the Mercyhurst Phonathon. In the future, she hopes to use her years of experience in higher education to be an asset to an institution and would enjoy working with students in some capacity.
