Testing Requirements

The admissions requirements into the Masters' Programs in Education require you to take either the Graduate Record Examination (GRE), or the Miller's Analogies Test (MAT). These exams must be completed and on record in order for your graduate credits to be counted. Applicants are encouraged to take the exam as part of the application process.

Graduate Record Examinations (GRE)

The GRE® General Test measures verbal reasoning, quantitative reasoning, critical thinking, and analytical writing skills that have been acquired over a long period of time and that are not related to any specific field of study. The GRE® Subject Tests gauge undergraduate achievement in eight specific fields of study.

Miller Analogies Test (MAT)

The Miller Analogies Test is a high-level, analytic ability test that requires the solution of problems stated as analogies. The MAT consists of 120 partial analogies that are to be completed in 60 minutes. The MAT is intended to measure your ability to recognize relationships between ideas, your fluency in the English language, and your general knowledge of the humanities, natural sciences, mathematics and social sciences.


The Praxis Series™ Assessments provide tests and other services that states use as part of their teaching licensing certification process. ThePraxis I®tests measure basic academic skills; ThePraxis II® tests measure general and subject-specific knowledge and teaching skills; and thePraxis III® tests assess classroom performance.

The PRAXIS examinations are a series of competency exams required by the Pennsylvania Department of Education as part of the certification process. You will be required to complete the PRAXIS 1 exams before you enroll for student teaching. In addition, the PRAXIS 2 exams are used to demonstrate competency in specific content areas, and must be taken before applying for your Pennsylvania teaching certificate, in the respective fields in which you are seeking certification.
