Health Sciences / Pre-Health Professions

Advanced Certificate in Health Sciences / Pre-Health Professions

This program enables college graduates to fulfill the admissions requirements of many post-baccalaureate health professional programs, including medicine, dentistry, osteopathy, veterinary science and physical therapy. It is intended primarily for those with bachelor's degrees in fields other than science, as well as those with a minor in a science field. All students will pursue an individualized plan of study based on their prior preparation and education plans.

Because schools in the health professions have such diverse admission requirements, each student's plan of study will be created in consultation with an Adult College Academic Adviser and the Pre-Medical Program Advisor of Mercyhurst University.

The Advanced Certificate in Health Sciences/Pre-Health Professions is not an easy undertaking. Nor is it a fast way around the fundamentals required for a student to attain a health career. Mercyhurst College offers the academic program and the certificate to encourage students who have undergraduate backgrounds in Behavioral Science, Humanities and other fields to pursue their dreams of becoming outstanding students and practitioners of the health professions.

A student who satisfactorily completes a minimum of 12 credits under an approved plan of study will qualify for the Advanced Certificate. No previous undergraduate or graduate level credits may be applied toward the 12 credit requirement.

Candidates for the certificate are also expected to maintain a GPA of 3.0, with a minimum grade of a "C" in each course attempted.

The following "core" courses are typically required for entrance into health care professional schools. All of these courses must be or must have been completed by each student in order to apply and matriculate into a health professional school.
