Intelligence Studies

The Department of Intelligence Studies offers a B.A. in Intelligence Studies, a M.S. in Applied Intelligence (both on campus in Erie, PA and online), along with several graduate certificates. Internships, research opportunities, and in-school employment are provided through the Tom Ridge School of Intelligence Studies and Information Science at Mercyhurst. These programs focus on critical thinking skills, analytical methods, effective communication skills, and a broad understanding of the function of intelligence analysis.

About the Ridge School

The Tom Ridge School of Intelligence Studies and Information Science at Mercyhurst University offers a bachelor of arts degree in intelligence studies, a master of science degree in applied intelligence, an online master of science degree in applied intelligence, and two graduate certificate programs that give students the education they need to pursue a career as an analyst in national security, law enforcement or business sectors.The Institute for Intelligence Studies and Information Science brings together the students and faculty of the Tom Ridge School of Intelligence Studies and Information Science at Mercyhurst University to perform high quality, low cost, open source research and analysis for private businesses and institutions and for governmental agencies through grants, partnerships and contracts. The students and faculty make full use of the theoretical and applied principles taught by the Ridge School to present actionable information for the Institute’s customers and clients. The Institute for Intelligence Studies and Information Science also leverages the expertise of the Ridge School faculty and subject-matter experts to offer a variety of standard and custom intelligence course development and training packages to clients.

It is the mission of the Institute for Intelligence at Mercyhurst University to produce graduates, through a variety of delivery modalities, who are skilled in utilizing a variety of sources of data and analytic techniques to lead the collaborative development of high-quality written and oral analytic intelligence products that, in service toward a just world, inform decision-makers, thereby fostering an appreciation for the dignity of work and commitment to serving others.

The Bachelor of Arts in Intelligence Studies program is an undergraduate degree for those with no prior experience in the intelligence field. The learning outcomes are influenced by the knowledge, skills, and abilities enumerated by employers in the field. Students who graduate from the Bachelor of Arts in Intelligence Studies program at Mercyhurst University are not eligible for enrollment in the Master of Science in Applied Intelligence program. The goal of the academic program is to produce an entry-level analyst capable of being successful in the national security, law enforcement or competitive intelligence fields.

  • Describe the theory and history of the discipline of intelligence
  • Demonstrate critical thinking skills.
  • Analyze collected data/information using a variety of analytic techniques and methodologies
  • Produce analytic products in written, oral, visual and/or multimedia formats
  • Execute extensive open source research and collection management
  • Implement and manage intelligence processes and practices.
