Dr. Surzhko-Harned earned her doctorate at the University of Pittsburgh. She received her bachelor’s of arts degree at the Edinboro University of Pennsylvania, and her masters of arts from the University of Pittsburgh, where she taught as part-time faculty before coming to Mercyhurst.
Dr. Surzhko-Harned’s doctoral dissertation is titled “The Ukrainian Voter: Cleavage-based Voting in a new Democracy” examines the development of the social cleavages and their effects on political party structure in Ukraine since its independence of 1991. Dr. Surzhko-Harned’s research and teaching interests are in the fields of comparative politics, comparative political behavior, and political theory. Her regional focus is Europe and the former USSR.
At Mercyhurst, Dr. Surzhko-Harned is also the faculty advisor for the Mercyhurst Model International Organizations Team.
Native to both Russian and Ukrainian cultures, Dr. Surzhko-Harned was born and grew up in Ukraine. She is a recipient of Future Leaders Exchange Program Scholarship (1998-1999). Dr. Surzhko-Harned volunteers with AFS Intercultural Programs and serves as the Sponsored Programs Coordinator for Western PA Area Team.
