Research Interests and Projects
Ed’s academic interests are broad but focus primarily on the archaeology of the Americas, with particular reference to the Southwest and Great Basin culture areas, Native American-Anthropologist relations, and perishable technologies such as baskets, sandals and textiles. Questions of social identity, technological change and innovation, social learning, and cultural transmission dominate Ed’s research on perishable material culture. His dissertation research uses basketry to examine questions about social diversity in the Chaco regional system (AD 850–1140) in the Four Corners region of the U.S. Southwest. A secondary project, being conducted with Phil R. Geib (Univ. of New Mexico), examines the role of basketry in the shift to intensive use of small seed resources on the Colorado Plateau in the American Southwest nearly 10,000 years ago.
Of mixed-blood Oglala Lakota (Sioux) and Hodulgee Muscogee (Creek) Indian descent, Ed maintains ties to family and friends in South Dakota and Oklahoma. On the Pine Ridge reservation in South Dakota he has been working with friends to address emerging concerns with tribal cultural heritage management.
