Dr. Deborah John ATR, BC is Assistant Professor of Art Therapy and Art Therapy Program Director, began teaching at Mercyhurst University in the fall of 2013. She received her Doctorate in Expressive Therapies from Lesley University, her Masters in Art Therapy from Vermont College and her Bachelor of Arts in Art Education from the University of Vermont. Dr. John teaches Art Therapy courses and is the faculty advisor to the Art Therapy Club.
Dr. John is an experienced Art Therapist who has provided art as a therapeutic tool to a diverse range of clients. She has worked with: adult psychiatric patients in both inpatient and out patient settings, youth and children in public schools, and adult clients in a private practice. Dr. John began teaching graduate Art Therapy courses in 2007 at Southwestern College in Santa Fe, New Mexico. In that position, she taught Archetypal Psychology, History of Art Therapy, Art Therapy Assessment, Individual and Group Practicum courses and supervised practicum and internship graduate students. Dr. John has also taught undergraduate art therapy courses at the University of Art and Design in Santa Fe.
